Rachel's Travels...
Wednesday 10 - Went to Arrowtown in the morning, catching the 9.45am shuttle. It used to be a gold mining town, but now has about 2000 inhabitants. Went to see the restored Chinese gold miners settlement. They have restored many of the houses, which are little more than tiny shacks. They also gave information about the miners lives - they had really hard lives and had to put up with a lot of prejudice, especially in the 1880's. After this I went for a walk along the Arrow river, and went back to the Ford of Bruinen. Had to cross over the river to get there, but managed to find a really shallow bit with stones to step on. Not so lucky on the way back, so took off my trainers and socks, rolled up my jeans and waded across - it wasn't really very deep. Stopped for an icecream and did a bit of window shopping before getting back on the shuttle at 12 noon. Arrowtown is really nice and has a Wild West image to it. Went for a walk around Queenstown when I got back. It's a really lovely town, quite small and quaint in parts. I think Queenstown is the nicest place I've been to so far. Went down to the lake which is where some of the jet boats leave from. There is also a really old steamer called the TSS Earnslaw which goes from the jetty here. By the jetty is a really nice pub and there is also a casino there. The views are so beautiful. As it was such a nice day I decided to go back up to Deer Park Heights again to take some better photos. We firstly stopped to feed the animals by the entrance, and I fed some sheep. Normally as soon as I go anywhere near sheep they run away, but this time I had food so I finally got my photo with a sheep!. Then we went up to the summit where it was really windy - the dust from the road got everywhere. But the views were so much nicer and the rivers and lake seemed much bluer. Went back up to my favourite location and took some more photos. Unfortunately because it was so windy I couldn't get the mountains to reflect in the tarn, but you cant have everything. Was up there for about another hour, going back to some locations and taking more photos.
The tour finished about 5pm so I went to the Internet cafe to download my photos. I was there for 3 hours and still hadn't finished. So thought I needed a treat so went to Pizza Hut which I had found earlier on my walk round town. It was 8.30pm when I got there to be informed that they were closed - what a stupid time to close! They did take-out so I got my pizza and chips but then had to walk really quickly back to the hostel which was a 15 minute walk uphill! At least I burnt off a few calories before stuffing my face. Thankfully there were some people in the hostel that night, but I didn't see much of them. I still had my room to myself though.
