Rachel's Travels...
Today I did a skydive, which was incredible!
Clare and I were picked up at the hostel at 11am, for the short drive to Taupo airport. Got fitted into our gear which consisted of a bright red boiler suit - lovely! The brochure said that you were supposed to get a full briefing from your tandem pilot at the start - yeah right!
Met the bloke, cant remember his name and he then told me he was going to get the parachute - well that would be a good idea. Got into the little plane and went up to 12000 feet. The view from the plane was amazing, the Taupo area is beautiful. Just before we jumped I got my "full briefing" which consisted off 'when we jump hold your harness, when I tap your shoulders hold you arms out straight'.
I got a bit nervous when the door opened and people started to jump (there were 7 jumpers). But it was then my turn and I was told to let my feet hang out the door - so I thought ok. It was a strange feeling sitting with my feet hanging out of a plane door so high up. I was only there for a couple of seconds before we went. Falling out of a plane so high up was scary and first and I'm pretty sure I screamed for the first few seconds. You are just falling and can nothing about it, it's also very cold and windy and so very high up. But it was incredible. You are supposed to freefall for 45 seconds from 12000 feet to 5000 feet, and then parachute down the rest of the way for about 5 minutes. But it went so quickly. The freefall was amazing and then floating down looking down at the beautiful view was brilliant.
The landing was ok, but I ended up on my arse (everyone else landed on their feet). The only slight downer was that it really hurt my ears, and they didn't get back to normal until hours afterwards. I loved doing the skydive and definately want to do another.
So what do you do after that, well go and have a McDonalds which is what me and Clare did. We then did the Spa Park/Hukka Falls walk that I did yesterday, but this time on the way back we stopped for a soak in the hot springs. It was so nice and relaxing and so very warm. Also went for a very quick swim in the river. It was very quick because it was bloody freezing. If you sat in the right spot you could have a very warm back and freezing cold legs.
All in all it was a great day today!
