The last two days have been incredible! If anyone is looking to see WILD orangutans up close and personal, Tanjung Puting orangutan experience it the only way. There are only 3 places in the world u can see wild orangutans. I have been to one, and Andre and Katie have been to the other.. And we all say this s***s all over the other two! You can choose how long you want to spent in the jungle (1,2,3,4 nights)... Our experience was only overnight. But it over delivered and exceeded all expectations!!
It began by being picked up (boat to boat service) from the Jaya. Our boat for the next few days was basic; double story, flat main deck with roof, drop toilets on lower deck and galley. That's it. Maybe 10m long?? Anyways is basic! So off as cruise down the river for maybe 1/2 hour until we come to a turn off (a narrow corridor surrounded by palms and jungle). Our guide asai informed us it would be a 2 hour journey from here to the first stop but to keep a look out for orangutans or other types of monkeys in the trees as we cruise by. As we lounge back in our seats, eating a delicious lunch I spot the first orangutan! Completely wild. Very close to river! Awesome!
First stop was a small feeding platform, a 300m walk off the rickety jetty. All 'deeted' up we see our first orangutan on the way, just chilling in the trees. There is no frills here. Just a first path. The feeding platform itself is also basic. It's the real deal here! Anyways sitting with maybe 4 other outsiders we watch a local fill up buckets with sweet milk and call 'Tarzan style to the jungle to alert nearby orangutans that foods up. And in they came! Mums with babies, dads, mire babies, teenagers! We were 1m away! Awesome! f***ing awesome!
After the first feeding in was back in the boat cruising down the river again. We saw makaks, proboscis monkeys and hornbills! Around 7pm the boat slowed to a stop. Another appeared with dinner all laid out (banquet) Style, with candles and everything! Sitting there listening to jungle noises, by candle light, in Kalimantan! So so cool! soon dinner was cleared and matrices topped with mosquito nets were spread out and off to sleep we went!
Next day. Woke up early to the buzzing activity that is the jungle. Breakfast and more deet! 2 more feedings today!
Summary: awesome! Orangutans doing their thing, watching pack mentality, mothers teaching bubs to climb, domiant male behavior! So so good!
I can't express this too well. Just wait for the pics :) oh yeah! So cute! Haha
We arrived late back to jaya tired, itchy, definately not hungry but in need of a long shower! I feel like the luckier person in the world!
Tomorrow we set sail at 3am on another 40 odd hour crossing bound for java!
Until next time. Xx
