For a day that started slowly, it ended with a bang! First BIG news - the weather today was fabulous! Instead of 93 which we endured on Sunday, the high was 68 with a cool breeze. LOVE!
Started the day by being the first one in Herkimer Coffee, an adorable coffee shop right across the street from Claire's apartment. It was a great way to start my day and got Claire off to work!
I worked this morning on both my P3 Series class (an online course toward problem based learning) and on the Sprouts class which starts today. For those of you who don't know, I am teaching the math component for Sprouts, a problem based learning center for high school students. Students are exploring the essetail question, "How can we feed a grwoing population" through the elements of botany, water, agriculture, nutrition, food production and food safety. Students are also attempting credit recover in math (that's me!), English and science. Today's work included a pre-assessnebt to help me determine individual needs in the course and a talke through MBTI preferences which I will use throughout the course to support collaboration. Tomorrow, the course begins with a study of plant growth the algebra and geometry embedded in that. I am teaching virtually from Seattle for another week or so!
After class, Grace and I hopped on the bus for Pikes Market - a favorite spot of ours. It was very crowded by the time we arrived, so it was a quick walk though the market and absolutely no hopes of getting in to the original Starbucks (that's OK, I'd had my Herkimer!) What to do????
We happened upon the Seattle Aquarium. We thought about going last summer and hadn't made it, so we decided to visit. What a treat! Our fist encounter was with the Giant Pacific Octopus adhered to the side of its aquarium. Yuck! We did learn a lot of octopus, though, and were amazed by the fact they live only 4 years! We wandered through the PNW section and spent quite a lot of time with the seals. We were fortunate to have stumbled upon an "unscheduled feeding" where we got to watch the handlers brush the seals' teeth, check out their skin and fins, and do some training. What a bunch of cuties! We spent about an hour in the aquarium and then went on to more adventure.....
When entering the aquarium, we decided to buy the City Pass, so now the city attractions were ours! Our next stop was to MoPOP (Museum of Pop Culture). First thing in the door, I thought of my friend Sharon, as we entered the Star Trek exhibit. For me, it brought back memories of watching the series over the years. Amazing how many costumes, artificts and video clips that were available to see! We worked our way through the rest of the museum: scienficiton, horror, fantasy, famous guilars and buitarists, sound studio and our favorite, Jim Henson. We loved reconnecting with the Muppets and watching some of the clips from the 70s and 80s! Jim Henson's story was so interesting and his work in other projects was unknown to me!
We hopped a bus back to Claire's neck of the woods and met her at Whole Foods for dinner. It was fun to reconnect and listen to her day and listen to Grace recount ours! We all ambled back to Cliare's to crash - everyone was beat!
Goodnight University District! We are excited for tomorrow!
