Well I've made it to the End of the World :) Otherwise known as Ushuaia this a little touch of Scandinavia in south America. You can even order "Swiss sauce" (white or cheese sauce) on your steak.
No photos just yet (camera still buried in my bag) but believe me when I say the mountains here are spectacular! As we were on final approach I looked out the window and saw a plane so far below us it looked like a remote control toy and yet the mountains looked huge! There is nothing to compare in Australia. Looking up and seeing these peaks disappear into the clouds is awe inspiring. They reach all the way down to the water and this little town is nestled in their foothills.
Ushuaia itself is a small town and easy to navigate. There are only about 4 main streets running parallel to the port and 20 or so running perpendicular. The further you are from the water the steeper the streets and most have stairs cut into them. Lots of Scandinavian influence in the architecture too with little wooden A frame shops selling handmade chocolates scattered among the bigger stores selling trekking gear and souvenirs. Only a couple of banks in town and every ATM has a queue. I'm hoping they don't run out of cash before I get to one. As with Buenos Aires the locals are all very friendly and helpful. It is much harder to find English speakers here (then again after being on a full plane 95% of whose passengers were from one middle aged obnoxious American tour group it's actually a relief).
I'm staying at the aptly named Antarctica Hostel which is well located close to the main shopping and restaurant street. Really friendly helpful staff here too. I was escorted all the way to my room and given a guided tour en route :). It's a lot quieter than the Milhouse in BA but then again I don't believe Ushuaia is as much of a party town. I think I'll have a quiet one tonight (still haven't slept more than 3 hours straight since Sydney and figure out where I want to explore for tomorrow.
