Finally, off to Zanzibar! One of the places on my trip I have been looking forward to the most.We left camp at 830am and got in our transfer to the port to get the ferry.Once we got there and out into the madness of Dar es Salaam, we had to wait an hour to board. The ferry was much better than I expected and air conditioned! There is basically no air conditioning anywhere in Africa, so anyone who happens to be reading this and thinking about coming here, be prepared to say goodbye, to air conditioning (and fans for that matter!), hot showers and flushing toilets.
On the ferry I sat next to a nice young man named Ramadani, who I chatted to and who wrote some Swahili words down for me in my journal.I would have loved to have chatted with him some more, but due to a rather sleepless night, with a mozzie in my net, and Jedi swat it, in the dark, I fell asleep and didn't wake up until we had arrived at Zanzibar, which is 70km of the Tanzanian coast.
We got off the ferry and went through immigration, and it was insanely hot.We waked to our hotel, Safari lodge and went up to our rooms.I almost jumped for joy when I saw an air conditioner, there is no power in Zanzibar until 6pm as the cable from the mainland is currently down and they rely totally on generator power, so I couldn't test the air conditioner then, but I did live in hope that it would work.
We went down to reception and met our guide Daniel, who gave us a short tour of the town in the scorching heat.We had a look around the small alley ways and streets and Daniel pointed out the "House of Wonders", the first house on the African continent to have electricity.
We were then allowed to go off on our own for a bit, so of course we all shopped.I bought a spears, another thing I will probably never get home.I do have a talent for smuggling contraband so I'll see how I go.
We met up with the group again at Africa House, which used to be the old English gentlemans club and watched the sun set, which was beautiful. We then went to the markets for dinner, I was too scared to eat anything in such a place. I couldn't even imagine getting sick in a place with no running water during the day. After dinner we went to a restaurant and I smoked the worst sheesha I think I've ever had.I then went back to the hotel, my hopes were dashed, the air conditioner did not work and I had a rather sleepless hot night, scratching my mosquito bites.
