How many times can you think, What the hell am I doing? In one day. I think today was the day I found out the answer to that question. We left Naro Maru rather early and headed for Samburu, we got there at about 10am, which was earlier than we had expected, we also expected the place to be flooded, but that wasn't the case either.
We pulled up to visit the Samburu village and were greeted by our guide, Gabrielle. We were also greeted by the women of the village singing a welcoming song. Gabrielle took Top Gun hat and put traditional tribal necklaces around my neck and made me go join in with the dancing, which I only too happily did. After a short tour around the village, we made ourselves a packed lunch and drove into Samburu national park. Gertie has hatches in the roof, so people can sit on top. So that's what I did during our all day game drive, sat on the roof of the truck, trying to spot the big five. This was the point where I had my first What the hell am I doing? moment of the day. Bouncing along on the roof of a fifteen tonne truck, over rough terrain in a game reserve, ducking acacia trees and holding on for dear life.
After the game drive we went back to the village, where I asked Gabrielle where Top Gun hat had disappeared to. Another village apparently. Great I just bought that. Gabrielle said he would go see if he could get it back. We got off the truck and Dave told us to start setting up and to get our tents up. Gabrielle told us a storm was coming and to wait until it passed. We insisted on putting our tents up anyway, telling him it would only take a minute. The storm beat us. Siobhan and I raced around trying to get the tent up in the torrential down pour, putting the poles in, clipping the tent to the poles, throwing the rain sheet over. The ground was too hard to peg the rain sheet down without a mallet, so I started to attempt to hammer the pegs in with a rock. My hair dripped in my face, my feet squelched in my shoes and I had dirt up to my elbows. I was soaked. Second What the hell am I doing? moment.
Almost as soon as we had the tents up, the rain started to let up. The cooking group started to prepare dinner, Gabrielle came up to me saying he had found the man who had my hat, but that he wanted to meet me before giving it back. I think at this point Gabrielle may have had a bit of a crush on me, having already offered Dave four cows for me, Dave said he only wanted two, cheeky b*****. Gabrielle then told me that the boys in the village were up to nine cows, someone else in the village had already told me that six was about average.
Just after dinner, Peter, the guy who had my hat, came up and gave it to me, much easier than I thought. Just after dark, I decided I needed to pee, there are no toilets, so you literally have to just go and find a bush in these situations, a few of the other girls wanted to go too. We all trotted off outside the village limits and found bushes, "Head torches off!" I said jokingly. Peeing in the bushes at night with seven other girls, third What the heel am I doing? moment. We then gathered around the campfire for traditional Samburu dancing. The Samburu people are the tribe that jump up and down to get the attention of the girls. The guys all got to have a go, then the women came out and danced for us. Then they all started dancing together, Gabrielle, then pulled me up to dance with Peter. The way the women's dance is not all that unlike the way I would dance if I were at blink. So I adapted. Rachel who ended up behind me yelled hysterically, "Are you moshing?" "Of course!" I yelled back. All the women loved my dancing and my hair. All the Samburu warriors grabbed a girl to dance with, I had two, one on each hand. Basically they just stand there and shake their heads at you and sort of grunt and you shake your necklaces, which just happen to be over your boobes at them, I took my hair out and shook that as well. Fourth What the hell am I doing? moment.
When the dancing stopped Peter spoke to us for about an hour on the culture of his people, Gabrielle who had gotten drunk, kept interrupting him with the story of how I got Top Gun hat back, which was funny at first, but then ended up being a bit annoying. His attention towards me was also starting to get a bit uncomfortable. After Peter had finished his talk, he said that we were welcome to sleep out in the open under the stars, next to the campfire with the warriors. Not many people were keen on that, but Guy, Yngvar and I all jumped at it.
I went and got my blankets and sleeping bag and Peter brought me a cows hide to sleep on. I got changed into my sleeping gear and went back to the fire. Yngvar was already there, unfortunately, so was Gabbs. Yngvar could see I was getting uncomfortable, so he put his arm round me and said, "Kristina, she is my girl!" and basically told him to back off. I quietly mouthed the words thank you. He is such a gentleman, he does things like that for all the girls on the trip. I pulled my cows hide right up next to his and said, "move a bit closer boyfriend" with a big grin on my face. We slept next to each other in case Gabrielle should return.
I cuddled up on my cows hide, under my Masai blankets, with my jumper under my head and looked up at the stars. Before I faded off to sleep, I had my fifth and final, What the hell am I doing? moment for the day.
