Up with the sun this morning for a full days game driving in the Masai Mara game reserve. We saw much more today than yesterday, we saw all of the big five, except a leopard.
By far the best thing we saw was a small group of lions, one of which had just killed a zebra and was trying to drag it away so it could eat in peace. The lioness gave up in the end and proceeded to eat her meal right in front of us. You see these kinds of things on shows like National Geographic, but nothing can prepare you for the harshness of life in the Africa savannah like seeing something like this happen right before your eyes.
We drove around the park for most of the day, we saw the wildebeest migration, which was going across the road right in front of the truck. The animals had almost formed a queue as they ran from a large heard on one side and stretched out in a long line on the other. We managed to reach as far as the Mara river, which is where the animal usually cross, there were none crossing today, but the river was absolutely full of hippos.
Leanne, Sue and I sat by the river in the sun and chatted while the passengers went for a walk with one of the guides that were hanging around. As much as I love overlanding, it was a relief to just sit there in the quiet and not be moving. The three of us ended up getting back on the truck and falling asleep, stretched out over the seats in the sun.
The passengers got back a short time later and we headed back to the camp doing more game viewing on the way. We got into camp and cooked dinner, while we were cooking some friends of Sue's turned up and we chatted to them for a bit. I managed to go to bed a bit later, and slept a bit better.
