After last nights antics, I unintentionally slept in until 10am which is not like me at all these days. I usually have trouble sleeping past 7am when I'm on the road. I then spent most of the morning fiddling with the stupid hotel's stupid WiFi in an attempt to get some work done.
I didn't actually managed to get out of the hotel until 12pm, and by then I needed to eat. I intended on going to the Forbidden city, so on the way I stopped at a place called Grandma's kitchen and treated myself to a very oily chicken burger. By the time I got to the Forbidden city it was 2pm, not least because I had to fight through hundreds of tourists and walk all the way through Tiananmen Square again. At this point I opted to do the Forbidden city tomorrow as it was only open until 5pm and I wanted to make the most of it.
I decided I would go instead to the Temple of Heaven. I got the metro there and found it after walking around for about half an hour. I paid to go and walked around the grounds, this seemed to be a place where Chinese people just come to hang out. There were lots of old men playing cards, a man with a long white pointing beard playing a sorts of pan pipe instrument and a lady twirling a ribbon and even a few people doing Tai Chi amongst the cherry blossoms.
I finally got to the main pavilion and the pagoda like structure in the middle which was really something, especially as it was surrounded by stone steps and statues which lead up to it. I spent the rest of the afternoon in the temple grounds and then headed back to the hotel. I headed out for dinner, I ended up at the Forbidden city hotel just down the road. They have a really good restaurant there. I ended up chatting to Mum on skype for the rest of the night. I plan to get up early and go to the Forbidden city tomorrow, lets see how that goes.
