Went down the street this morning to see if I could do something about my phone, only one place sells phones and doesn't sell IPhones, so I couldn't do anything about it, back to the Nokia and our camera.
Rose had a good shop up ready for a slow crossing of the Nullabour, then we met up with Barb for a coffee and farewell before heading off.
We went out to the Weather station on the way out and watched the balloon being sent off and how they track it with radar, very interesting.
At Penong we turned in to the coast looking for Cactus Beach a world reknowned surfing beach. A pretty rough road in past a really pink lake on one side and normal sea water on the other, then you come across all these people camped in the bush (it costs $10.00 each to camp and no toilet even that we could see). I went for a walk over to the beach at about 5pm and there were a dozen surfers in the water, it was quite windy and cold.
We decided we would drive on a bit further and see what was at the point. Amazingly we headed down a track towards the water and came across this place called Port Le Hunte. It has an immaculately kept jetty and building for shade, even a locked off play area for children complete with toys left there. There is a netted off swimming area, A thirteen year old boy was taken by a White Pointer in the seventies swimming out to a Cray Boat, so the local farmers saw that it wouldn't happen again.
Amazing what they did in the old days. They dug out the cutting to get down here with pick and shovels. In 1916 they loaded 60,000 bags of wheat from here. They would load them on a cart 30 at a time and horses would take the cart out into about a metre of water and loaded them onto a small boat that took them out to the ship. Pretty amazing. This is such a beautiful bay and the only other people here were a couple of fishermen in the evening and one in the morning, they got a couple of crabs and tommies. other than that we had the place to ourselves free of charge.
