Had a Walk along the beach this morning before getting underway.
Went in to Fowlers Bay, a very ordinary place with the strongest wind blowing off the sea. A lot of history about the place, the Wind Generators were interesting to see. Stopped at a couple of cemeteries that were quite interesting. Then back to the highway.
Yalata Roadhouse is closed completely and you are banned from going in anywhere at Yalata. A bit further down the road we decided we would turn off down a side track and go the back way to the head of the Bight where they have the whale watching setup. It was only just a track that ended up going through some low sandhills, a couple of times we had to get out and have a look which way the track might have gone. It was a really good drive without stressing the Trakka too much at all.
We eventually came across the head of the Bight setup where they have a flash walkway down the cliff face. The building was a distance away and looked like there was no one there so Rose put dinner on (some Whiting we had bought in Ceduna and chips). Just got it started and we had a knock on the door, with a bloke telling us we were on private property and would have to leave immediately, said we would have to go back the way we had come even though there was a bitumen road about 500 metres away through his place. Anyway after a bit of discussion that involved the fact that we had come across Yalata Aboriginal lands which you are not allowed to, he let us come through the gate and out the main entrance to the Whale Watching. It is an immaculately set up area for tourists, the buildings are really special and the gate in is very imposing and just the best bitumen road comes all the way in from the highway. When he sent us off he said the gate would be locked, just follow the fence line and you would be able to get around, we did and the fence only went about 100 metres and we drove around this massive locked entrance. An interesting time.
We then went into the Nullarbor Roadhouse and had a shower and clean up ($1.00 for 5 minute shower). And finished the fish and chips Rose had been cooking, beautiful. Then went about 25km out the highway to a camp spot for the night, an interesting day that turned out well. I think they are serious about keeping off the Aboriginal lands though, must take note.
