You know that rhyme - sleep tight and dont let the bedbugs bite...well we failed to achieve either of those last night....not one of our best night. Anyway we were glad to get back on the road and away from our hotel! Our first stop was to see the Cadillac Ranch where the cars are buried in the ground. In its heyday this would have looked absolutely stunning...but unfortunately today they let people come and spraypaint the cars..mind you it is still a fascinating sight. Our next stop was the midway point...here we visited a diner where we stopped for the most delicious cinnamon rolls ever...we thought we would share one..but that idea lasted for about three seconds ( its all about the food remember!!). Then on the road again to Russell's travel centre...this guy is a collector of everything. He buys old cars and just does them up..to an immaculate standard. We then stopped to take some photos of some more iconic route 66 images including the blue swallow motel and the teepee shop ( ordinary photography on my behalf!)..both featuring in Cars. At some stage we stopped for lunch at Denny's...I was going to type that it was a quick bite...but alas it wasn't ! Then we had a big drive to get to Albuquerque crossing into New Mexico from Texas ..during this time we watched a classic old John Wayne movie about Billy the Kid. We stopped in old Albuquerque for a little while so our rooms and luggage could be organized...this is a rather arty area with many galleries and artworks. After a brief rest we went out to the famous Route 66 diner for tea...we are learning that our entrees are their starters and appetizers and our main meal is their entree! The diner is famous for its milkshakes and banan splits...it is a true route 66 institution. Just some interesting facts...there used to be over 60 million buffalo in Texas but the government decided to cull them as a way of destroying the Indians main food source so now there are only a couple of thousand...pity. We have a couple on the tour who have a home in Miami and are organizing it to be boarded up in preparation for the hurricane...they are really on edge and I don't blame them. I forgot to mention the great bleu cheese incident of 2012 where Hannah allowed me to drop cheese all over myself....the repercussion will be huge!!! Another concern is Hannah's singing of the song route 66.... Special goes no where near describing the sound...I didn't realize that the word route has seventeen syllables !!! At the hotel we are staying at they are having a comicon...comicbook convention..so we will be coming across some strange outfits !!!! We were also talking about the pace of the trip and a fellow traveller said that this is no vacation...this is an experience...we liked that description. We are having a big veg day tomorrow until we head out for tea.
