We started off today in a solemn way with a visit to the Oklahoma memorial. We were glad we visited the memorial last night as it was quiet a moving experience. The visit today gave us the opportunity to see it in daylight and to visit the museum. They do memorials exceedingly well over here ( just a pity that they have to). The museum gave us an insight into events leading up to the fateful day, the sights and sounds of the bombing, the victims, the rescue efforts and the subsequent investigation and arrest. It was a very thought provoking visit. They have a pay it forward scheme where you donate money to allow school students to vist the museum...We thought that was a great idea. After this we hit the motorway and travelled out of Oklahoma on our way to the route 66 museum in Clinton. This was a pretty impressive display of memorabilia displayed on a decade by decade basis. I have started collecting t-shirts...probably enough to clothe the tribe we have been feeding with our leftovers! After a quick bite at a chip less KFC we were on the road again to visit a number of iconic places on the route. Randy, our tour guide, mentioned the changing skyline of the US..from windmills to water towers to mobile phone towers...progress? On our travels we visited a car yard ( old classics sitting idle)' the u drop inn which was a bustling diner in its heyday, the Phillips gas station, a leaning water tower ( built that way on purpose) and the big ( really really big) cross. As it is all about the food we had tea at the Big Texan, an iconic restaurant which had the selling point that if you could eat a 72 oz steak in an hour you could have it for free...it is massive!!!! The food and atmosphere were fantastic and definitely very Texan....a fact about Texas...they have over 70 million head of cattle in the state !!! Talking about food...I have also become addicted to peanut butter ice cream...yum...yum. We ended our day with a welcome piece of cake ( yes more food) at our hotel. Rather an action packed day! As I am typing this Hannah is dealing with a blocked toilet...the joys of hotel life !!!
