I get up early, grab the free breakfast of toast and bananas, enjoying the coffee at the almost empty restaurant located in the hostel. The weather is wet and doesn't suit my confidence levels on a moped. Fang is 40 miles away and I dont fancy being stuck in a downfall. I get ready and continue the walking tour. I had spoken to the staff at the hostel about booking a bus. There are 2 bus stations, but I can book it from station number 1 near the night bazaar. For a pound more I book the VIP bus at 12:45pm tomorrow. Chiang Rai is peaceful and I like wondering around remembering Thailand. I find a wat that I genuinely found appealing. Wat Jed Yod. A large gold Buddha adorns it with some really nice murals along the walls depicting legends from the religions teachings. A peaceful place and I spend longer there than most Wats. I even give a donation to the tip box. I notice on the hostel map a small bookshop, passing small guesthouses along the way, reminding me of the type of place Craig and I would have stayed at in the past. The bookshop is in a German guys house. He seems glad of the company and we chat for awhile. He hasn't been to the south in 20 years and I explain some of the changes 3 years after his last visit when I went and from my recent visit. I don't think that he has any plans to go back, the mountainous north similar to his familiar surroundings in southern Germany near the alps. I wander along the back streets and find a small street with a few eateries and bars on the way up to the clock tower. I pass a street with a breeze and use that whisper to have lunch at one of the bars. I get some spring rolls and a green curry. The spring rolls are excellent. Really crispy with vegetables and the local chewey glass noodles I discovered last night. The green curry is the best so far, packed with chicken, red and green peppers, the local aubergine and a herb, maybe a mint variant or something similar to Paksa.
Stuffed, i wash it down with my favourite, mango shake. I get a water and sit typing up my notes.
I wander back through town and relax back at my hostel on my last night here. I have enjoyed Chiang Rai more than I expected. Whilst sitting on the roof area I am joined by French guy and a German girl. I sit with them for awhile, amazed anyone else has come up here. I say my goodbyes and call it a night.
