We made it to Vic Falls without further mishap and quicky found Mramba River Lodge where we planned to stay and where we had arranged to have our parts delivered only to be told they didn't do camping anymore. We quickly found somewhere else called Bushfront Camp and went to book our excursions. I had wanted to go on a walk with lions encounter which was on the Zimbabwe side of the falls but due to the fact that general elections were taking place in Zimbabwe and our previous experience of African elections I thought we had better give that one a miss.
We took a short game drive though the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia's smallest and although we didn't see much wildlife we were lucky to see the only white rhino left in Zambia. There had been two but one was shot by poachers last year and the remaining one has two 24 hour armed guards watching over it. We bumped into the guards who let us walk through the bush to the rhino but I think we were all a little disappointed as it wasn't 'white' and just looked like any other rhino to us!!
Peter & Steve went on the micolight flight over the falls and Paula and I the helicopter. Peter was quite nervous on the way as he is frightened of heights and doesn't like flying. He came back looking a bit subdued but I really enjoyed the helicopter flight. We were in the air about 15 minutes and flew all around the falls and immediate area. The spray from the falls, which the locals call the cloud that thunders' can be seen for quite a distance away.
We watched several young backpackers do the 111ft bungy jump from the bridge which leads to Zimbabwe and was glad that I couldn't hear them screaming as they dropped like stones to the water below. Next to the falls itself there is a small pathway and bridge that literally crosses right in front of the falls. You can stand eye ball to eye ball and watch the water crashing over the top of the falls and you can't hear yourselves shouting to each other above the thunderous roar. The only downside of course is tht you literally get soacked to the skin as it feels just like someone has thrown bickets of water at you.
We did have one more vehicle mishap whilst at Vic Falls but this time it was Steve who locked his car keys in the front of his truck. After much scratching of heads and being told by the hire company that it was the renters responsibility and they couldn't help the rear window was removed and replaced by Peter & Steve and the keys retrieved.
AFter one last meal the time had come for Paula & Steve to leav for their two day back to Lusaka and we moved camp to Maramba River Lodge staying in one of their 'safari tents' with en suite bathroom to wait delivery of our parts.
HOWEVER!! this being Africa and nothing goes according to plan we discovered the parts were stuck with customs at Lusaka airport awaiting payment of duty and taxes amounting to about 200 pounds. As it is better to take things 'into your own hands' here and not just wait for things to happen we spent a whole afternoon on the phone, internet and fax with the customs agents who arranged to release the package and it would be sent overnight the Livingstone the following evening. The next morning we spent the whole morning in the town centre visiting various banks trying to send money who wouldn't entertain us as we didn't have a bank account. We eventually used Western Union and sent the money to Lusaka.
On Thursday morning when the parts hadn't arrived first thing as promised we got on the phone again and they told us they would be arriving at the central Post Office by Express Parcel Post. We shot up there and waited for an hour and eventually they arrived!! As I write Peter is away fitting the new bellow to the air suspension and hopefully we can be on our way to Namibia.
A good example of trying to do something out of the ordinary here is last night Peter wanted a salad for his main course but they only had a small salad as a starter. He asked the waitress if she would check with the chef if he could make the salad larger as a main course and he would pay the extra. She came back and said he could do a larger salad but they were not able to charge us extra!!???
