It rained during the night so we left at 8 a.m. to get on the road early as we didn't fancy the drive back down the hairpin bends which would have been much worse than coming up. The road out south was a sandy track but with evidence of damage by the rains in several places as we drove along. It was thundering and lightening with heavy black clouds and the wind was whipping up, a sure sign of a storm on the way. Peter was on pins as once the heavens opened the could easily turn into thick tyre clogging mud within minutes.
We were making good time having travelled about an hour when we turned a bend in the road and the track was none existant having been washed away in a previous storm by gushing water in the culvert underneath. There were 4 guys working to repair the track, but the state it was in meant there was no way we could cross it with the weight of the truck and camper. Peter got out and had to instruct the workers how to do some hasty repairs to enable us to get through. They had to put logs over a gaping hole in case we went over the whole with the back wheel and shift the clay like earth around to make a safe track. When he was happy Peter drove over it with his heart in his mouth but he made it without mishap. We gave the guys some money for their help and wnt on our way.
We made a quick stop in Mazuzu again for more supplies and carried on along the lake shore to Chintcheche a long and beautiful stretch of lakeshore and camped at a lodge which had a lovely campsite right next to the beack which we had virtually to ourselves for the first night and then a couple of safari vehicles and and overland truck turned up so it was somewhat busier the second night.
