We had a choice after leaving Senga Bay whether to go to Lilongwe the capital ready to move on to Zambia or travel south to the bottom of the lake to Cape Maclear and we chose Cape Maclear. Unfortunately aftter a few miles the road became a sandy track which steadily got worse and worse and after another 60 miles off roading we decided that if we had know the road was so bad we would have gone to Lilongwe instead. However, as soon as we saw Cape Maclear we changed our minds. It is a scenic jut of land with a long sandy beach looking out towards Domwe and Thumbs Islands just off shore. It is a picture postcard reladxing place and Fat Monkeys camp was ideally situated just on the beach. The weather was good here with a nice coling breeze and we didn't have any thunderstorms although we sat on the bach one night watching a spectacular elterical storm in the distance over the lake.
