It's been a busy few days!
The night train wasn't quite what we were expecting! You kind of assume that a train line won't have bumps in, but not in Thailand! Lots and lots of bumps! They also left the lights on, and even behind your curtain, it was still bright for sleeping! So not much sleep was had!
We finally arrived in Bangkok, 2 hours late! We're starting to learn with all these journeys that they tend to lie about how long they take!
Bangkok was unbelievably hot! In fact, it was unbearable! We got a tuk tuk to Khoasan Road and Paul went to find a travel agents to book the trip to Ko Phangan. We dropped our bags at the travel agents, and went straight into McDonald's for breakfast! It wasn't the food that drew us in, but the air con! We're not sure we've ever felt heat like it! We just couldn't bear to be in it!
When we reluctantly left McDonald's, we basically went from one 7 eleven, to another, just to get more air con! We tried to wander around some markets, but soon gave up! And before long, we ended up back in McDonald's for lunch! We felt like we were wasting the day away abit, but we were so tired and so hot, that we didn't know what else to do!
After lunch, we went to find the hotel that we're booked in to for new year. We stopped for a drink, and it seems nice enough. Sarah was struggling to stay awake, so we walked to a bar around the corner, that had cushions you could lie on, and Sarah had a snooze! Mmm, much better!
We bought some sandwiches for the journey, had a quick look down Khoasan Road, and then we were off! The final leg to Bottle Beach!
We got on the bus at 6pm. It wasn't a sleeper bus, but it was pretty comfy, and the seats reclined a long way! The 12 hour bus journey began, as did our second night of not much sleep! It was probably a good thing that we were knackered, as by the end of it, I think we could have pretty much slept standing up!
We then had to wait for two hours, before getting on another bus! At this point, we swore never to do this journey again! It's such a killer! And it was flipping raining! We couldn't believe it! The forecast had said rain, pretty much every day for the last couple of months, but we didn't actually believe it!
We finally got on the second bus, which took us to the boat!
We managed to stay awake on the boat, and arrived at Ko Phangan at about 12.30pm! We were so close!!
We had to wait half an hour before the the truck was ready, they needed to get the 4x4 as we were going by road. Apparently it was too choppy for the boat. Paul was pretty gutted by this, as part of the beauty of Bottle Beach is that you can only get there by boat!
The truck ride was quite an experience! We were sat on the back, with no cover, and nothing to really hold on to! It started chucking it down about half way, so we got pretty wet! Luckily, it cleared pretty quickly and we dried within minutes!
The road got progressively worse, until you could no longer call it a road! It was pretty scary, as we were slipping down some pretty steep mud slides! It was certainly different to the boat!
We finally made it, and were so happy! I'm not sure we ever really believed we would! We've spoken about changing our route lots of times, because it's so out of the way, and hard to get to! But we were here, and ready to start Christmas!!
