We have finally reached the West Kimberley port town of Derby located on King Sound, population 5,000, noted for its king tides up to 12 metres which are one of the highest in the world and unusual boab trees. Day 39. Breakfast on the deck at the Fitzroy Crossing Lodge today, traditional land of the Gooniyandi people. Beautiful view out to the river and grassy van park. Drove down to the Old Crossing and stopped for photos. We were amazed at how huge the Fitzroy River must be in full flow in the wet season - presently a dry huge sandy channel with big waterholes but it can rise above 18 metres in the wet! Very early departure from lovely Kununurra today as on Ross' recommendation, we have decided on a long haul into the West Kimberley and to spend 2 nights at the Fitzroy Crossing Lodge Caravan Park. Day 37. Up early as we are getting picked up for our flight on a float plane with Kimberley Air. Adam our young pilot was so friendly and knowledgable on the East Kimberley region. We flew at about 2,500 metres over massive blue Lake Argyle to the Bungle Bungles in Purnululu National Park. Hundreds of beautiful red, orange and black domes resembling rounded beehives. Day 36. Today the Prado has been dropped off at Kununurra Toyota for a mid trip service. Breakfast at a local cafe then a lazy day reading and washing. We have discovered that a rest day occasionally is good for re-charging and the shore of Lake Kununurra on a Monday is just the place!
