Day 13. Early onto the Stuart Highway north as we have another 600km to drive today before we can relax in the Kimberley. Lots of huge road trains up to 54 metres long with 3 wagons carrying fuel and cattle. Turned west onto the Buchanan Highway, good dirt for 400km through Top Springs, crossing the mighty Victoria River, past the famous Victoria River Downs Station and finally stopping the night at a lovely campsite by a pandanas palm lined waterhole at Jasper Gorge. This place was the site of ambushes by aboriginal warriors on donkey supply trains to and from Victoria River Downs in past times. I can sense that Ross he is getting excited about coming back to the Kimberley where he lived and worked as a young fella so, so long ago. Temperature hit 26 degrees, our highest yet. Beautiful rugged gorge country with high red bluffs and giant mesas. Saw our first crocodile sign so we must take care! Nibbles and a quiet beer around the fire then dinner of pork chops, salad and white wine. Great way to end a long day.
