We arrived in Verona to our most expensive accommodation yet - a lovely B&B which could only host 4 people at a time. Funnily enough, we ended up paying as much for our first night in Munich about 2 weeks later because of couchsurfing mix-ups, ah well.
We decided to make the most of the European twilight and went for a walk into the city. It was a beautiful little place with tonnes of character-filled old buildings. The best find though was the Roman Arena - a smaller, but much more complete colosseum-like structure. This one is actually still in use for the Opera and the acoustics are so good that there is no need for sound-systems! It was opening night when we walked past and a few thousand people were in the line.
Another interesting sight was the speed of the current in the river. A pretty buff looking kayaker was doing his daily exercise paddling against it, and not going very far fast (except sideways).
The next day we explored a bit more of the city before getting on our longest train trip of the tour - 7hrs to Shaffhaussen Switzerland. Fortunately we had some lovely people in our compartment who spoke English and were keen to have some great conversations, which, combined with the breathtaking Swiss scenery, served to make the trip very enjoyable.
