So today we woke up relatively early and packed our lunch ready to head off to Monte Carlo - Monaco to check out the glamour and luxury. Jumping on the train grateful for our handy dandy Eurail passes we were on our way.
When we got to the massive underground station we were confronted with about five options for exiting the place and we somehow managed to pick the one that took us up to the top of the hill with magnificent views of the harbour and marina. After winding our way down we had a look around the large marina with large, flashy boats (mostly stinkboats dad, but some nice, 70ish ft, varnished timber monos too). We think that a lot of them were there for the "Showboat Rendezvous" in a week's time, but a lot just live there too - lots of money in Monaco. We picked out our favourites and discussed the finer points of sail versus motor and how we think the hydrofoil system works. A lot of the time we had no idea what we were talking about but it was great fun pretending.
Then it was up the hill again to check out the purportedly flash casino, which we were too young (and definitely too poor) to get into, so it will have to remain 'purportedly flash'. It was a pretty nice building, but not as nice as the couple of Ferraris and other assorted luxury sports cars parked in pride of place out the front.
Then back on the train for a scenic ride to Nice, and some more beach time before dinner. Tonight we tested out some more French cuisine in the form of a local specialty 'socca' which is a yummy, ultra flat bread made out of crushed chic peas and served hot with pepper as a snack.
And there ends our French adventures. Tomorrow it is off to Italia, home of pizza, pasta, leaning towers, sinking cities and roman ruins. Keep checking in!
