Arrived into Phnom Penh and made our way to Eighty8 Hostel. Pretty good hostel! Clean, friendly staff and a pool. What more can we ask for! Dropped bags in the room and went on our usual exploring and made our way towards the riverfront. Today the king has been cremated and when we were sitting in a restaurant we then saw pretty amazing fireworks which we can only guess was in celebration of the kings life. He had actually been dead for three months which is the length of time they morn here.
We also had the best meal ever!! I had Amok and Emer had Loc Lak.. If in Cambodia you must try both of these... Amazing!!!
When in Phnom Penh we decided we definitely had to visit the killing fields. I knew a little about the whole Pol Pot and the genocide that Cambodia had experienced, but nothing had prepared me for the emotional experience that I had when I went to the killing fields.
The building that contains the skulls and remains of just a few hundred of the 3 million people that were executed, forms that centre point. It's a very powerful experience seeing the remains of the so many people put together like this.
Make sure to get an audio tour. Without that, you will get very little out of the tour. It gives a very frank account of the atrocities that were committed, without being gratuitously horrible . When you visit the killing tree, it is very difficult not to be overcome with emotion. To imagine babies and children being smashed against the tree is just too much to take in. There is another tree that had loudspeakers hung from it, which played music. This was to muffle the cries of those being killed.
A must see exhibition but I must admit its not something I'd want to do too many times. We then went to S21 which put the whole story together because the people had been starved, tortured and examined here before they went to the Killing fields. Very informative but brutal at the same time.
We then went to the central market which is very much same same but different. It's amazing how much of the same things can be fit into such a small space! Had a bite to eat here of noodles, spring rolls, nuts, herbs and some weird clear sauce but it was pretty amazing for $1.25.
Then we made our way to the Wat Phnom. I do think that one temple is morphing into another at this stage. They are all beautiful but it is the same thing each time. I would imagine we've had our fill of temples at this stage.
After all that walking and exploring in the humidity, we decided there was only one thing to do and that was head back to the hostel and enjoy a few Cambodia.!
Beer belly status... It's f***ing huge!!!
Making a move again tomorrow morning the location this time is Siem Reap.
