What is better than a great nights sleep, then waking up to deer in the meadow and looking out the other window and seeing a beautiful lake? Not much!
Not surprisingly, Ken and I woke up before Paige, We wanted let her enjoy the quiet, so we went to the lodge lobby to grab coffee and sit by the huge fireplace. The peaceful setting was a perfect way to start the day. After breakfast, we packed up and headed for the our night at the ocean.
On the way to Kalaloch, we passed through Forks, WA where the Twilight series was filmed. None of us were huge fans, but it was hard to miss the "TwiHard Tours", "Bellas Bistro", etc etc in the tiny logging town.
When we arrive at the Kalaloch Lodge, our room wasn't quite ready so we went to Ruby Beach, about 6 miles away to wander and enjoy the views. Ken, found a huge rock that he couldn't resist climbing, regardless that it required some nimble moves across the surf. He tried to convince Paige and I to join him. Once the tide went out a bit Paige found an easier route so was able to get to the rock without hitting the water. She and Ken played on the rock, having fun climbing and exploring the nooks and crevices.
Our room was ready, so we checked in and settled into our two room cabin overlooking the ocean. It had no phone, internet or TV, so we picked a couple of board games and a puzzle to pass the time. How often are we totally disconnected? When Ken and I walked to the lodge store we saw two pay phones and laughed that we just don't see those any more. Once we found out that we had no cell service, we understood why there were still in service!
Paige took a walk down the beach and came back to report she found a baby seal! She and Ken reported it to the front desk, who advised the Ranger would check it out. Paige and Ken walked back down the beach and met the Ranger who said the baby seal was fine and the mother was most likely out looking for food. However, the little seal decided he liked Paige and inched his way over to her....sooo cute! She refrained from getting to close, so as to not compromise his future with his mom. But in the process, we got some great pictures! Really, how amazing is it to see a just born seal (with umbilical cord still visible), waiting for his mother. I did see him later in the afternoon, and the tide was coming in, so we just hoped his mom came back in time to take care of him.
While I took an afternoon nap, Ken and Paige went to Beach 4 (yes that is the name), where there were tide pools. Not only did they see the anemones, but sea stars and other cool residents of the tide pools. Once again, climbing on the rocks was the order of the day.
We enjoyed a very nice dinner at the lodge. Back at the cabin, Ken built an awesome fire in the wood burning stove (it was cold!) and then, instead of board games and puzzles all three of us fell asleep.
