So, we get to sleep in!! But, sleeping in means that instead of waking up at 5am, we wake up at 630am. Ken and I woke up, but Paige was still sleeping so we snuck out to find coffee and some food. We decided to walk the 8 blocks down to Pike Place Market to see if Lowells was open. Lowells, is a cafe in the market for years, and has been in several movies, including Sleepless in Seattle, We were in luck, as it opened at 7am and we snagged a great table with a view of the water.
After some wonderful smoked salmon, bagels, coffee, etc we wandered back into the market which was in full activity mode. While we were in Lowell's, we caught a whiff of some amazing cinnamon rolls, from across the street. So, we had to have one! We found the shop and got a roll, plus a vegan/gluten free blueberry muffin for Paige. Who knew if it was going to be edible, but for $2.25 we decided to give it try ( she liked it). Then, we grabbed a coffee at the original Starbucks,(which is a very small storefront) and walked across to a park overlooking the water. Unfortunately, the cinnamon roll smelled a lot better than it tasted, so we just enjoyed the coffee.
After the market, we went back to the hotel to start our journey towards Olympic National Park. The Park is located on the Washington peninsula and has many different looks/feels in the 1500 square miles. Included in the Park is Mt Olympia, Hoh Rain Forest, Lake Crescent, Lake Quinault and the Pacific Ocean coastline. Luckily, it is still early in the season so we were able to get rooms at Lake Crescent Lodge and Kalaloch Lodge (on the ocean). From Seattle, we took a 30 minute ferry ride to Bainbridge Island and then did a quick stop for lunch at the Poulsbo Farmers Market. Dana, a great friend from high school has a crepe shop in Poulsbo, and sets up a crepe stand every Saturday at the farmers market. Fortunately for Dana, she was extremely busy flipping crepes and unfortunately for us, we didn't get to visit much! However, we did have two yummy crepes and picked up some snacks for the road.
The two hour drive to Lake Crescent was uneventful and we arrived in time to enjoy a bit of sun shining on the beautiful lake. After finding our two room cabin overlooking the lake, it was time to enjoy the trails and rain-forest. There were several options, and we chose two trails located behind the lodge. One trail led to the Marymere Waterfall , while the other was 7.5 miles one way. We obviously weren't going to make the 7.5 rt before dark, but decided to go as far in as possible and then turn around and head back. Kind of a "trail to no-where" deal. The trails were easy , with a few climbs up hill, but the scenery was spectacular. Every shade of green was represented, with lots of ferns, moss and lichen in every corner of the trees. The waterfall was beautiful, and we walked across some cool log bridges (and didn't fall off).
After our 2.5 hour hike, we retired to the lodge to enjoy the lake view and some nice wine, while we all did our electronic activities Dinner at the lodge was relaxed and enjoyable, but sleep was the order of the evening. Once dinner as over, Ken didn't last more than 15 minutes before dropping into dreamland, and Paige and I weren't far behind.
