A lot of ground covered since the last blog, we have been gradually working our way south and east through the heart of Spain.
Our first stop after the Picos de Europas was Segovia on the high plains, which is famed for its suckling pig. We arrived during some festivities where strange costumed performers pranced around throwing chocolate money at the crowds, unfortunately none came our way so we gorged ourselves on half a suckling pig at a local restaurant instead.
Next we went on to Salamanca with its spectacular Plaza Mayor and medieval buildings, we are now true aficionados and there are some rules we have observed to building Spanish medieval towns:
- Always build your medieval town on the top of a hill with very steep access roads on all sides
- Always make streets incredibly narrow and hard for motorhomes to navigate
- Always provide minimal parking particularly for larger vehicles to ensure they endlessly circle the narrow and steep streets!
So it was then back to the hills and a regime of walking and cycling, firstly, the Sierra de Francia where we did a couple of nights and were reluctantly forced further south by bad weather. This was followed by more medieval hill top towns in Extremadora then onto the Sierra de Segura and Sierra de Cazorla where the highlight was a 25k walk into the mountains to a remote lake.
So now we are on our way to Murcia to meet up with Sarah, Brian and family with the prospect of a normal bed, a swimming pool and proper shower and toilet!
