Our Global Gallivants
BORING!! The population here is only 8,000, but they have 47 restaurants! The largest concentration of Basque (Spain Spanish) restaurants per capita in the U.S. That would be 2. We went to the Basque restaurant in the historic Martin Hotel. They have long tables and will seat you with strangers. They eat their dishes individually. We ordered the lamb shank dinner to share. First they bring out bread along with a carafe of wine which of course we declined. Next was bean soup, then green salad with another dish of beans that you spoon over your salad. We thought that would be kind of weird, but it was actually good. Then comes another 3 dishes together-carrots, mashed potatoes and beef tongue cooked with red and green peppers and onions. At this point we are joined by 4 big guys that do maintenance on the cables and wires that run the hoists in mines. They were going to be working in the Barrick gold mine here. We are already full when the lamb arrives! Delicious! Finally, dessert-bread pudding topped with whipped cream. It was good home cooked food, so a surprising highlight in Winnemucca.
