Ok, let me say this now and get it done with. And if I mention it again, well, it won't be the first time I've repeated myself, will it? Campfire coffee is the absolute best! Ok, so it's on a Coleman stove, but it's a fire and it's in our camp. Even if we weren't crawling out of the tent frozen stiff it would still be good! Well we had picked out from our handout what trail we were going to start with. Drove to parking lot 1, got out and were about to look for signs or go to the visitor's center to find the trail. I saw people going off to the right to Mather Overlook. I told Jeff I had seen that in the paper as well and it was only a 5 minute hike. Lets go take a peak! Let me tell you, no amount of any kind of coffee could have prepared me for what I walked up to! I'm hoping all the other tourists were so engrossed with their own viewing that they didn't notice the tired looking 57 year old woman going through what probably would have appeared to be a low level breakdown. I gasped, threw my hands up to cover my mouth and started saying "Oh my God!" over and over. And the tears! I couldn't stop crying. I'm crying now writing about it! Shoot! Tears on the keyboard, not a good thing. Let me mention that Jeff was crying too. That's right! Tears of fear! He was great the whole day as we hiked around the rim on different trails. Some places he would inch his way out to the railing and do a peek. Other places he'd just stand back, let me go look and admire the view from where he was at. Some of the places were a bit scary because it looked like the huge rock you were standing on was jutted so far out and there was nothing but a mile or so of space between that and the bottom of the Canyon. Who cares if there is a strong railing when it looks like the whole rock could go crashing with just the slightest nudge? We have a new word here. Whereas in Arizona it was vast, here it is Immense. To me that word implies the addition of depth to the vastness. I'm not sure I'd get the folks at Merium Webster to agree with me but, hey, have you seen some of the additions they've added to the English language lately? Ok. Grand. Last word on this entry. Grand.
