Another big driving day!! Caitlyn and I (Joel) got up early and went for a walk along the Barcoo. Went up to the Qantas crash site and checked out the memorial. It is made out of a petrified tree and the plaque on the front tells of the crash in 1927. Left Tambo at about 8am. Camping on the river was a great little spot and would stay there again; Tambo is a nice little town. We next stopped in Barcaldine to see the Tree of Knowledge. They have a massive wooden box built around the dead tree like an austere mosoleum. Inside there is giant wooden wind chimes (4x4's) hanging around the tree. It is all very somber sitting outside the railway station with emus roaming down the Main Street passed the four pubs. Very labour. Stopped for lunch in Longreach with a quick look in the stockmen's hall of fame and qantas planes across the road. Too costly to justify the short time we were there so left them for next time. The most interesting thing was 3 Brolgas outside which were happy for us to sneak up and get a few shots. Drove on to Winton and out to Bladensburg NP for our next camp. The country really changes dramatically as you leave town. The camp was well worth it, very desert like next to large waterholes, budgies flying around in the ghost gums above the spinifix. We are in the tropics now so will slow down the driving now to enjoy the scenery a bit more. JB
