At the end of a 44 hour over land journey we departed on the night ferry into the darkness and I placed my first foot on a Thai island (long awaited with excitement). But at 5am the island was still sleeping, so we found some beach lounger and tried to have a nap, unsuccessfully.
After booking onto an open water diving course we found our beds cosily waiting with air con, and we slept.
Much like Vang Vieng, Koh Tao has given itself whole-heartedly to the tourist trade but this time to take you beneath the waves. And so began my padi with two days of theory, tests and swimming pool skills practice.
In the meantime Jo 'killed time' with a refresher course. She came home beaming and constantly telling me different descriptions of the fish she saw all evening ☺
Day 3 meant the sea and with it panic. Descending to four metres with no visibility meant fight or flight and I gave the thumbs up, which in diving doesn't mean great, it means I'm surfacing! Hopefully I'll have another go in January.
After lots of kebabs and BBQ corn by the beach we left Ko Tao the way we arrived, on the night ferry to somewhere new.
