Still buzzing from our whale encounter we searched for our perfect free camp spot. It was an illusive little bleeder but once we'd arrived it was sure worth it. Bryn set to work creating an artistic driftwood fire whilst I started dinner preparation in the van like the good girlfriend I am! The evening was spent with tinned daal and rice, backgammon and beers on the beach next to the fire (no wafting necessary with the sea breeze).
Rested up and sunrise from the camping spot and we started the engine and we headed north east. This was essentially a long day covering ground to get us closer to Abel Tasman National Park but with new Zealand being the land of natural beauty we couldn't help a couple of hour long walks at Cullen point and Pelorus river to break it up.
Cullen point turned into a clam collecting mission on the estuary ready for dinner the following day and thoroughly covering our boots and walking pants with mud. Pelorus river and gorge was another good little stop to prevent the pressure sores and to get our first Lord Of The Rings fix with the setting of the Hobbits 'barrel rider' scene.
Not much further was quirky, artistic, Nelson and where we planned on staying the night. With our laundry dropped off with a local very chatty old kiwi girl at the public toilets we showered away our 2 day stink and donned the waterproofs and went in search of some local souvenirs for our 'one-day' house. Souvenir-less and a little soggy from our first kiwi shower we decided to collect the laundry and make a bit more ground ready for tramping tomorrow. The tourist info car park in Motueka served us for the night with a public toilet and even a picnic table, sadly no sunrise, crashing waves, or open fires but you could say we've been spoilt up to now!!!
