So today we took the free excursion from the hostel to Pearl Harbor so it was another early start! It's really well organised about 15 of us went and you get a minibus to Pearl Harbor and then they organise what time you'll be picked up. Entry into the memorial is free and you see a movie on the events leading up to Pearl Harbor, what happened on the day and what it caused after. It was really informative and quite moving in parts, around 1400 people died and most of them trapped on their ships. After the movie you take a boat ride to the memorial they have constructed which is over one of the ships that sank, every ship has a marker over it naming it and this one has buoys at the stern and bow, you realise how massive they are. Once on the memorial everyone is so quiet and there is an area with the names of the people who died, 38 sets of brothers were among them and also the names of the survivors. You can see parts of the ship above and just below the surface which is quite eerie. Then we headed back across to be taken back to the hostel, there is plenty more you can do around Pearl Harbor like a tour on a reconstructed ship and museum. I definitely thought it was worth doing and great way of keeping the memory alive and was done with a great deal of respect.
Back in Waikiki we had some lunch then took the body boards down to the beach, after me having a small panic attack at the size of the waves I ended up having so much fun and was in the water for 3 hours. I think I did quite well but did have fins on to help me paddle into the wave but I got pretty much everyone I tried for! Got some good colour in the process which is a bonus! After the beach we came back and Olof cooked a lovely steak for dinner and I crashed at about half seven my legs, arms, back and neck were aching from the body boarding when you're out there you dont realise how hard you're working!
