Surprise surprise, I'm using the Petronas towers as the image for this entry. Not cliche at all...
Anyway, I had a bit of a nightmare journey to Singapore. Christophe and I were on the same flight to Sydney from Christchurch and got to the airport relatively early so as to be on time and not stress out. Got to Sydney fine and had loads of time to spare but turns out that there was some sort of engineers strike going on so we were delayed flying out. As a result, we both waited another 6 hours for our connecting flights. Good times. I got a meal voucher though so I went to wagamamas. Surprisingly, its pretty much the same in australia as it is at home. Anyways, I g eventually got on my onward flight to Changi and arrived at 3:15am which was just awsome. I tried by best to sleep but this plan was thwarted by the complete lack of any flat surfaces bar the floor. So I lay on that for about 20 minutes until I decided that I probably looked like a tramp. I got out my phone and listened to the radio. There was some programme which taught you how to speak spanish. Quite odd.
Got an airport shuttle to my hostel at about half six. No one mentioned on the hostel booking site that the hostel was, infact someone's house. In a block of falts. And on the 26th floor. Anyway, that aside, it was probably the nicest hostel I have stayed in so far. Singapore gave me big big hair but that was probably the only bad thing. It combined two of my favourite past times (of sorts), shopping and eating, but on a f***ing massive scale. You can get anything and everything you could possibly want. All at a low low price. And the food is f***ing awesome. Unfortunately, I got lumped with some idiot of a bloke from London who proved to be incredibly annoying. He wants to be a merchant banker. I reckon I'll probably make a return journey to Singapore cos it was that awesome. Anyone want to come?
Got the night train to KL which was pretty funny. So so disorganised. Pretty much cos its organised my the malaysian train service and they operate on rubber time. Managed to get a couple of hours of sleep on the train on my little bunk. Got an early morning cab into the city and to my hostel in Chow Kit which could be described as a place where druggies go to die. Its pretty awful. However, I spent a couple of days quite happily milling around the city in various malls and food courts, eating huge portions of ridiculously good food for small change. Bought a 160 gb hard drive. For 30 quid. Annoyingly, the stupid bloke from london ended up at my hostel and I got lumoed with him for another couple of nights. However, I did manage to get to the cinema to see iron Man which made thigs a bit more interesting. It could have been s*** for all I care. It cost me a pound. I s*** a pound.
The following day I got a cab to the hostel where i was supposed to be meeting my volunteer coordinators. they took me back to the dram studios where they base themselves in sri hartamas. There was some sort of drama/cultural exchange taking place so there were a bunch of f***ING WEIRD drama students practing some contrived piece that they had written. The vast majority annoyed me. Quite a lot. In the evening we went downtown to luna bar which is on the roof of the regency pacific hotel. Awesome. Went to melaka the following day. It was a shame because I'd rather do it by myself and have a more personal experience of it all. However, I did manage to break away from the group and gorge myself on beer and hawker food before the minibus ride home.
Watched some sort of production that the drama exchange had put on for the locals. It was just odd. i didnt get it. Perhaps I'm missing the point. There was also a performace by some of the people that i will be working with over the next few weeks. All of them are recovering addicts. Some of them are HIV positive. They had obviously out a lot of work into it and although I didnt understand most of it, that was probably the best part of the evening. Went out afterwards in Sri hartamas and watched some football. Stayed up all night talking. Felt f***ing awful the next day. Went into KL CC and minced around in a daze after eating Nandos (def NOT my choice). Went to a pool party afterwards (it was by a pool but not really a party atmosphere) and then hit a night market. Bought a durain (about f***ing time), 3kgs of rambutan, 1kg of mangosteen and about 20 oranges. Said goodbye to the drama people.
Got up early under reena's request. Reena is the girl who I will prob be working with on the volunteer scheme. I thought she was alright at first but I now see, she's a massive p**** I'd elaborate but it would take too much time. I'll dedicate a whole new entry for that. She wanted to go up the Petronas towers. We got a cab in. they were closed. We went up KL tower instead. Quite good although I felt like a pig had shat in my head.
Got back to Sri Hartamas and met up with some project coordinators. We will be moving to the rehab clinic/hospice on wednesday. As weird as it sounds, I'm really excited about it. This was the main reason I came away and I can't f***ing wait to get to work. Game on. How are you? x
