Travel musings from Sonia
Dear friends,
Well its taken me a while to get back to this site and write a note-sorry for the long time between updates!
I arrived in London on Saturday after a pleasant train journey from Wales. The remainder of my time at Borfa Hafod near Caersws in Wales(don't you just love those names!) went well. I celebrated my birthday with the family on Guy Fawkes night by going to a community run bonfire and fireworks display. The bonfire especially was very impressive.
After I arrived in London I went out with Rachel and Ian to friends of theirs for another dose of fireworks! It was a good evening but the next day I wasn't feeling the best spending most of the day vomiting up anything I ate or drank! Not very pleasant and I didn't think I was meant to get tummy bugs until I got to Asia!! Anyway it didn't last too much longer than 24 hours so after a recovery day on Monday I got into sightseeing again..
On Tuesday I got into the central city in time to see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace which was impressive especially the marching bands. I wish I could play clarinet and saxophone and march like that! I then spent the afternoon wandering around the Natural History Museum. It was a fabulous place where I could of spent many more hours-the kind of place I think you would need to come back to many times to see all the galleries. They had an exhibition on of the winners and finalists of the "Wildlife Photographer of the Year" which was really great. The photos were incredible and there were about 4 New Zealanders featured among the final photographers (out of an initial pool of 18,500) which was great to see.
Yesterday morning dawned cool but sunny so I went to the Shakesphere Globe Theatre on Southbank. I think the reconstruction of the theatre is very impressive and the museum/exhibition very imformative-overall a place worth visiting. I then met up with Uncle Alan at the Tate Modern. I haven't seen Alan for a very long time (probably around 20 years-would that be right Dad?). He said he wasn't sure if he'd recognise me because the only photo he could find was when I was around 5 years old! Anyway we regonised each other at the entrance and had a great time catching up over lunch and then a a wander around some of the exhibitions in the Tate Modern Gallery.
I finshed the day at St Pauls Cathedral for Evensong led by the cathedral choir which was wonderful.
Today the sun is shining again (!) and I'm planning to get to the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge.
Thank you all for your messages, emails, cards etc. It's always lovely to hear from you all.
Better go and get another day of sightseeing in!
love, Sonia :-)
