Day 62, 4 September 2012, Pamukkale, Turkey - Evening. Goodness we're spoiled. Hassan of the Dort Mevsim hotel has just brought us back from a decent drive up the nearby hills to watch the sunset. It was only from this very high vantage point that we could pick out the huge distance we covered today when we entered at the South Gate, walked all the way to the North Gate and back again to exit via the pools. Gosh. Fit bunnies indeed. The drive up the hills through very lush countryside was briefly interrupted with a stop to get a large bag of figs an older lady had at the side of the road - so fresh the juice was still wet where they'd been picked. The Chinese guests in the bus were mildly interested, but had no interest in actually eating them. At $3 per fig or $20 odd per kilo in Sydney figs are an utter luxury. We restrained ourselves admirably only snorking 3 or so each... Until we got back to the hotel and he went to throw them away.... Needless to say we spent the evening eating figs and ordered some icecream to go with them after our poolside dinner. The highlight of our evening excursion, aside from the view of where we'd walked and of course the sunset, was looking up to see a tandem paraglider swoop over our heads on it's way down to the travertine terraces. Lucky we're not here another day is all I can say, but tomorrow sees us on a 3.5 hour bus trip to Selcuk, from where we can explore ancient Ephesus. Sleep tight history buffs - we'll be teaching college courses by time we leave Turkey.
