Day 97, 9 October 2012, Strolling Barcelona and Menu del Dia - It was hard to carry on, especially with the thought that Dwermy the iPad might not arrive until after we leave Barcelona on Saturday (that's Dos Wormy or Wormy the 2nd in Spanish). But we persevered and our new friend took us on a tour of some of the central sights - La Boqueria, a fabulous fruit, seafood, meat market built on the remains of a convent (juice stall pictured). We continued down Las Ramblas and headed into the Gothic Quarter and enjoyed lunch together at one of her favourite restaurants. Our first experience of the Menu del Dia... or menu of the day. We tried some local delicacies and a bottle of blanco and even dessert, all in the posh surroundings of a restaurant that was a watchmakers'home. Still in the same family and the walls are decorated with clocks and art. The tables are decorated with cloths and the waiters are decorated with dinner suits. Frightfully posh but awfully nice and very civilised in the middle of the day. We continued down past the Mirador de Colom (aka. the Columbus Monument... something to do with discovering America...) and then headed up to the terrace of an exceedingly nice hotel that made the credit cards in our wallets wiggle very nervously. Just went up for the view over the harbour, cruise terminal and lots of gorgeous private yachts. Pondered again the amazing public transport, the happy people, the inexpensive drinks and food and the anti-austerity rally back in Madrid. We find Spain immensely enjoyable and a bundle of contradictions. Had planned a walking tour but decided to postpone it in favour of a siesta and some vital grocery shopping back in Badalona. Pizza on the terrace for dinner followed by a night time stroll down to the beach via the main shopping street. They have Zara. Not that I´m buying. But it´s jolly nice to look. Back to Barcelona tomorrow for some serious sightseeing.
