Day 97, 9 October 2012. R.I.P. Wormy the iPad - First day with feet properly on the ground in Barcelona. Maite came to visit at 10 am to take us to the local metro station. (Wow. Rave, rave, clean, brilliant, fast, cheap and, as it turns out, so easy to use an infant could do it.) We emerged 20 minutes later at the Apple Store in Passeig de Gracia, downtown Barcelona - only open for 2 months but swarming with people. And Apple products. We queued, we explained, we were directed, we explained, we were finally listened to and we said on 23 September in Morocco we agreed to the iOS 6 software update and the little fella's been in an Apple screen coma ever since. They made an appointment for 30 minutes hence and then, after the triage was done, said, no problem as long as you have a recent backup then we can restore him, download the backup and all will be fine. We felt like we'd received good news in the emergency room. Having become super paranoid back-up people since all our trip photos are on the iPad, we had in fact done a back up the night before to the iCloud. Oh Happy Day! Oh Happy Day!.... They plugged him in, the Apple Genius was even wearing a connection cord around his neck in the manner of a stethoscope. They wiped his memory, they reloaded his soul... photos, contacts, iBook library, the doctor said ¨CLEAR" and hit the Apple equivalent of a defib device and CPR combined. We were excited, we were devastated. Without so much as a moment of silence Wormy, our little Apple friend, was pronounced broken. And they pulled the plug, just like that. A replacement will be given to you, could be 3 or 4 days. Arrgh.
Wormy, wherever you are, may the wi-fi be strong. May your screen not have sticky fingerprints and may you remain fully charged in your Apple afterlife. Amen.
