Day 84, 26 September 2012, Feria de San Miguel, Arcos de la Frontera - We are truly on Spanish time now. By the time we were dressed and ready to roll it was onwards of 1 pm... We explored the local shops including a cheese store so ripe it was about to pop. The sun being well and truly up (apparently - we´ve brought heavy cloud cover and rain to the South of Spain...) we popped into a bar in a cave. 2000 odd years ago it was a hidden Synagogue and jews sought refuge here during tumultuous times. It is now a cosy cafe/bar and Sherry is the only possible drink on an empty stomach. After exhausting the local shopping possibilities, Carmen drove us to Carrefour! Heaven - massive supermarket full of all sorts of treats, including the previously Allah-forbidden bacon by the tonne. Quite a bit of which ended up in our trolley. We had lunch on the table by a relatively respectable 4 pm or so and having polished off a local Blanco white wine with lunch we all trundled off to bed or sofa for a solid siesta. James and I are fitting into the Spanish lifestyle quite well it seems. The evening saw a casual stroll proposed, which turned into an outing and due to the dearth of parking in Arcos (especially due to the rain) we headed out to the reservoir for this great view of Arcos by night. Not enhanced, not retouched - it looked just like that. It was still early and another lap of town didn´t produce a parking spot - so it was off to the Fair! It is the first night of the annual Feria de San Miguel in Arcos. At the end of each September, Arcos has a fair/feast in honour of Miguel, its patron Saint. The local fair ground was covered in side shows, a ferris wheel and rides - from a carousel with real horses (albeit shetland ponies) to bull ride type affairs and dodgems. We smiled like the big kids we really are (obviously not being grownups...) and shared the first stick of fairy floss (candy floss) either of us has had in decades. We saw the young girls and young women who had competed in the Flamenco dancing contests crowned and presented with bouquets and, when we least expected it, (it being 10 pm) the Feria was officially opened and all the lights came on. Wow. Talk about tripping over events world wide... first the TanJazz festival, now the Feria de San Miguel. Who knows what tomorrow will bring... a day trip to Sevilla is planned, but the weather may yet intervene.
