Arriving in Dunedin, we had heard it was famous for 2 things, beer (Speights) and chocolate (Cadbury's). Being lovers of both we thought it would be rude not to get involved.
Dunedin is Celtic for 'Edinburgh', we wondered why we kept seeing lots of ginger haired folk playing the bagpipes and tossing the caber! It's also freezing cold in Dunedin as well, think it rained every day we were there, so a definate reminder of Scotland.
Our first trip in Dunedin was to the Cadbury's factory. This was pretty good, although we went on a saturday so didn't really get to see much chocolate actually being made. Still it meant we got more freebies so the extra choccy was a crowd pleaser. We also found out that the curly wurly is made in NZ not England, we import it all from the Kiwi's. That's an interesting fact eh!
After Cadbury's we headed to the Speights brewery. Many of you at home probably haven't heard of Speights but over here they are mad on it.It's brewed in the South Island and the slogan is 'pride of the south'. There are lots of cheesy adverts on TV that go with it, based around the southern man usually all greased up in a stetson with a few horses. The brewery tour was good, we got to go around the building and saw all the different aspects of the brewing process. At the end they let us go into the bar room and pour our own tasting glasses, which was really cool.
Incidentally the founder of Speights was a Yorkshireman James Speight. Now thats 2 Yorkshiremen, the Kiwi's should be grateful for. Captain Cook, who found them and James Speight who brought the beer to the party. Think they should have actually named the country New Yorkshire instead.
Next stop Oamaru to see blue penguins.
