Saturday 20th February dawned bleak and raining, after such an amazing day before, it was a really cool and southerly change. Pretty nice really, so we just chilled all day, catching up on saving our photos and going for a couple of walks dodging the rain drops!
One such walk to the beach, which has a big reef wrapped around snuggling up to the cliffs at the southern end, took our imagination to new heights. Check out our photo and see what it is that just doesn't look right!
Sunday started pretty bleak after a night of rain, so we had a drive south, exploring. There are so many holiday spots down side roads, like on the edge of Lake Conjola – a great spot. We drove through Milton (think Maleny on Sunshine Coast) and into Mollymook which has a good surf beach, and then down the road to Ulladullah where again Bill spent time surfing as a teenager at the Golf Course reef! I think he is enjoying this trip down memory lane recalling his misspent youth! Everywhere we go, he recalls some story or another.
A scenic walk to North Head was great, with fantastic carvings and insights from the local aboriginal community who have worked with the local authorities to impart their history and points of view of this area. I found it fascinating to read, via carvings and a few words, how the Aborigine people of the district were affected by the coming of the Europeans – it wasn't decrying the fact, just how it changed many things which had been known by them for thousands of years.
As you can imagine, being up high on the headland, the views again amazing! I never tire of this coast – it is rugged and beautiful.
The cloud started to clear around 2pm so we headed back to camp and Bill caught a few waves at the stingray beach – 150m from the van. How good is that! No getting on the 'net to check out the surfcam, just walk down to the beach, yep there is a wave, and in 5 minutes you walk back to the van, get the board and you’re in the water! He is in a little Bill heaven right now! Great stuff!
Monday we went for a kayak and fish for a couple of hours at Berringer Lake which we had checked out the day before. A lazy day just chilling!
Tuesday we went north to Jervis Bay to try and find Bill’s youth! He surfed Cave Beach and Summercloud Bay. This part of the coastline is in the Booderee National Park with is a jointly managed place by traditional owners of the land and the government. We had no problem at all paying a small fee for a 48 hour pass to this amazing place. We found Summercloud Bay, in part of the Wreck Bay aboriginal reserve, which was as Bill remembered – although no surf. What a beautiful place.
Then on to Cave Beach. It was a 500m walk down a gravel road to the beach and camping ground. For a man who doesn't like walking that much, it is amazing how far he will carry a surf board for a wave! We could see the beach on the northern side of the small headland, as we walked down the hill but Bill was positive that wasn't where he had surfed in the 60’s. Remembering back, he had walked in on the southern side so we managed to find a track and another 800m walk we found it! And what a sight. Not a soul anywhere! We were the only two people there and Bill had the nice left-hand break all to himself – a solid 3-4 foot waves.
I had a great time scouring the beach, taking photos and soaking up the sun in awe of the fact there was no-one else around. After an hour or so, it was a long uphill trudge back to the car. We were almost at the end of the gravel road when a wallaroo casually hopped out of the bush, right beside Bill, bounced along beside him less than a couple of inches away, then just as casually bounded up into the car park. There he was, by the car, picking away at the grass not even giving us a glance as we put the board on the racks and got ready to leave.
On the way back to the edge of the National Park we noticed a sign to an historic light-house at Cape St George. About 19k on a gravel road and we were at the Cape – the views amazing, to say the least and the remnants of the sandstone lighthouse and living quarters well preserved.
What an amazing day! Absolutely knackered when we got back to the camp after so much walking and sightseeing. No rest for the wicked though! It is time to move South tomorrow morning. We were going to go to Broulee Beach but decided that there looked to be a lot to see and do at Merimbulla.
