So in total I ended up staying in San Pedro for 11 nights, 10.5 days! I must say I enjoyed what became a little break from travelling- nice to be in one place for a few days, ok, a few more days than normal! Thursday I went for a walk to the ruins of the Pucará de Quitor, about 3km from the centre of San Pedro. It was my ideal type of walk since it was flat, but it was pretty hot! The Pucará is on a hill so you get great views of the surrounding landscapes, including the volcanoes and mountains. Pucará is an indigenous Andean fortress and dates back to the 12th century. It was invaded and conquered by the Spanish in 1540. I also went to the museum in San Pedro which is a good exhibition of the history of the area, dating back to the first inhabitants, the Atacamans, the indigenous people of the area. It shows how they have been influenced by other cultures (Tiawanaku, Inca, Spanish). Whilst on one of my other trips I learnt that the National Park here is jointly managed by the local indigenous community and CONAF, the organisation in charge of National Parks, which is good as they have a say and responsibility for the area which was once theirs. I had the opportunity to practise my French and German with other travellers at the hostel which is always good and had some nice meals with them. The hostel staff continued to ask every day "are you staying today Nina?" ha ha. I also spent some time chatting to my friend Anna about her trip in July, when she will hopefully come to visit! Following this I decided to go to Bolivia via Northern Argentina and got a ticket to leave on Sunday 6th May- thinking if I had a ticket I would definitely leave! And I did, finally! :-)
