We drove past Black Mountain which almost looks like a dump heap but it is actually quite interesting. It started as hard granite rock but got fractures which allowed water in. This caused a chemical reaction, softening the granite into a soft clay. This clay was washed away leaving large rectangle granite rocks and weathering has rounded them. We had our first night without rain in a while which meant we finally had some dry clothes. It was also our first day of blue skies and sunshine so we explored the area around Elim Beach going first to the coloured sands. It was high tide so we just saw them from a distance. With an early start, we drove through Lakefield National Park (QLD’s second biggest National Park) and Battle Camp Rd to get to Elim Beach.
