It was only a short drive south to Yardie Creek this morning where we started with the walk. The first half is on a flat pathway alongside the gorge. The second half continues over natural rock up with views over the gorge. The water was quite shallow in a lot of the creek and clear enough to see schools of fish and a ray. We drove to Oyster Stacks which is one of the designated snorkelling areas. There isn't much sand and rocks line the banks with waves breaking upon them. It is also recommended to only snorkel at high tide which we did. The snorkelling was great here. There was a fair current pulling south which was hard to swim against. We saw sheep and emu's on the side of the road driving into Exmouth. We didn't think Exmouth itself was that exciting. The Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station is huge and the towers are a stand out north of Exmouth. We stopped at Pebble Beach and Bungedi Beach which were pretty ordinary compared to the beaches along Ningaloo Reef. We had a big driving day to a free camp at the Termite Nests just out of Exmouth. We stopped for lunch at the viewing area for the Rio Tinto Iron Ore mine. A great spot with picnic tables and the huge trucks drive past quite frequently. The boys waved to them and they all tooted their horns except one truck. Today we had a relaxing day by the beach. The boys mostly played with their trucks outside with Zach building a quarry. We went on some walks up the hills and collected some interesting shells along the beach. We found many empty crab shells at low tide and some interesting corals.
