Round the World in 155 Days!
We arrive in a sunny Airlie Beach ready for our sailing trip and met up with some of the guys from our first Fraser Island group. They have just come back from their trip and inform us that there is a cyclone on the way and their skipper had said that sailing out in it would be 'suicide' - with this little piece of news we head to our tour office to see what is going on, where we are informed we will defiantly be sailing. We laze around for the rest of the day and i manage to persuade Nick to go to a 'make you bead shop' - very entertaining watching Nick make beads especially when he holds them up to ask if i think they are ok and they all fall off and scatter around the floor!!
We go to the harbor and wait to board our boat ( S V Whithaven) and meet our group. There are 24 of us and everyone turns out to be really nice even if some are a little strange. There are two Irish girls Meriead and Jane that have been sunburnt and blistered so bad that they can harley move but have drank 40 liters of wine each in the last 10 days!!
We sail around and everyone is chatting and getting to know one another and there is a lot of drinking going on. The crew (Harley, Brett and Joss) say that they have never had a group with so much drink! We sail around Hock Island and stop at a cove for snorkeling. As it is the Great Barrier Reef Nick persuades me that i should at lest give it a go so we get in our stinger suits, fins and masks and Nick jumps in, I eventually jump in as well, adjust my mask and put my face in the water...... about a million multicoloured fish swim around my face - i freak out and nick is swimming along side me saying 'whatever you do dont look down, its amazing but dont look down' I put my face in again but i really dont like it, we are really close to the coral. Luckily Brett comes and rescues me in his boat I explain that i dont like fish- he doent quite get it and spends the next half an hour explaining how they cant hurt me and starts feeding them and about a million blue fish swarm to the boat and start flapping around. Brett makes me feed them and i start throwing the food as far away from the boat as i can while he is putting his hand in and demonstrating how they are not hurting him and i am like 'I kown they dont hurt i just dont like them!!!!!' he eventually takes me back to the boat. Nick Really likes it and comes back delighted with his under water snaps. We chill out on the boat listening to David Gray and have a really nice evening chatting to everyone and drinking in the sunset.
Me and Nick get up at 5am and go up on deck to watch the sunrise. We have breakfast and and set off to Whithaven beach. They say when you travel you discover things about yourself you never knew-on this trip i discovered i get sea sick. The sea turns really choppy partly to do with the cyclone and by the time we stop at Whitsunday Island I am really ill. Even when we get off the boat i am still being sick. Whithaven Beach is rated as one of the nicest beaches in the world and even when we reach the view point i feel to ill to look at it and when we eventually get to the beach we both go to sleep (nick doent feel great either). When we wake up we both look like sugared donuts as the sand is so white and fine. We appreciate how beautiful the beach is for about a minute until i am sick again and we head back to the boat. Lucky one of the girls on the boat had sea sicken tablets and they make me feel better for the rest of the trip. Nick does some more snorkeling and feeds Bat fish. We sail past Hayman Island which has a resort where rich people go including Brad Pitt - you are only aloud on if there is a real emergency!! The whole group gets dropped off at a sand bank and we watch the sunset.
Nick Snorkels again the next day . We see turtles come up for air that are massive and dolphins and head back to the main land. I am quite glade to have my feet back on solid land apart from we continue to sway for the next 2 days! We all meet up for drinks the night we get back and everyone drinks quite a bit - One of the guys that happens to be staying in our room at the hostel is there and Nick tells him to get on the table and dance. He does and as he is dancing he turns his head and it gets sliced by a ceiling fan. There is blood everywhere and an ambulance has to come! but he is ok, only a few stitches in the end.
