Round the World in 155 Days!
Hello
Fraser Island was nice, great fun driving a 4x4 over the sand
especially when your regarded by the group as some kind of 4x4
expert, very strange. The lakes were unbelievable but was glad to get back to clean clothes and a shower. The hosital experience was also interesting, i did take a picture of N in the hospital (she agreed to) but i thought it would be unethical to but it on the internet. It was quite funny to see her going from great pain to high as a kite and smiling like a chesire cat after given gas. She must of been still druged when i asked if she wanted anything and replied a Mcchicken crispy.
From Fraser Island (Harvey Bay) we got the bus to Rockhampton, intially as a break from the full 12 hour journey to Whitsunday's. Were unsure about the stop, but got to hostel and had to have a steak (Beef capital of oz). Had steak at Ascot Hotel, stone cooked fillet. The most amazing steak i have ever tasted, this glorious piece of meat was out of this world, it was so juicy, and literally melts in your mouth, incredible.
We only have a day here and want to get a taste of the outback (real oz). We leave on a tour with Capricorn Dave. His tour was used by Jackass on their Wildboys tour apparently. Dave turns out to be the Mick Dundee character, really friendly but crazy, for starters he walks around all day in bare feet, even in the bush. First we go to Koorana crocadile farm, some beasts including 'snappy tom' make an appearence. Hold a little croc and nearly drop him and watch a baby hatch, which is impressive.
After the croc farm Dave informs us we are gonna do a few swims in a creek and billabong, this news could of gone down better had we not minutes before been informed that the quick, monsterous crocs can silently attack on the smallest of vibrations in the water. Great! Dave aka Dundee informs that this is highly unlikely as the crocks cant get there, however no one thought that you could walk on the moon! As adidas say 'anything is possible', especially when theres a juicy human and hungry croc involved. We go to Stony Creek national park and after dirt track reach a beautiful clear creek, cant resist a swim/snorkel but keep an eye open for moving logs. See some fish and Nicky jumps out, then turtles come swim by us, which is an awesome sight. We relise that Dundee dosnt really do things by the book, and just loves the nature. We head down dirt tracks out into vast open spaces, and the wet lands with loads of wildlife, see the biggest bird of prey, some kind of eagle thats just taken out a kangeroo.
Dundee finds a well and at the bottom of it a snake that he thinks
may be the deadilest snake in the world. ARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! "OK, Dundee thats nice now lets get the hell outta here." To our horror bushman does the opposite runs off (barefoot) fetches a tree branch and proceeds to fish the venomous killer (5 mins to be exact) from the well and close to our proximity. Thank the lord, the snake crazy man informs us its not a killer but a tree snake that will only blind you if bit in the eye! We are pusuaded to hold him, "Pretty cool to hold a wild snake in the wild" Dundee points out, scary business. However, thats not the end of this little episode, low and beyond Dundee thinks the snake might be blind so wants to take him home just to make sure. In he goes to a bag and we bounce off with the snake on the passenger seat and us sunglasses ready for attack.
We go to the billabong and get out the raft and float along it
looking for more snakes, but luckily none were found, Dundee looks well annoyed by this. We spot some Wallabies on the water bank and an apparent great croc breeding spot, although again assurances are given that no crocs are around. Happy to get out the raft but discover that our snake has escaped from his bag that was hung on the fence. Maybe not so blind, as the bag was tightly sealed. The sun is setting and it really is incredible in the outback, the orange pink and purple is amazing and the wide spaces add to it. We set up a camp fire, where there are loads of toads, Dundee picks one up and it wee's all over him he keeps flicking it to show us is venom, which can kill if licked! Get more steak on the go and Dundee like a magician produces an eski with ice cold beers! We sit around the camp fire swiging cold ones and watching the clear stars in the sky. No guitar and cun-by-yar or whatever it is. Bed at 0130 hrs but up at 0530 hrs for sun rise and rising mist across the plains.
Head to Mackay on bus for one night at Yha, and next day to Airlie Beach for Whitsundays trip. This is where we find ourselves now, and its incredibly humid, in the tropics so back to the Malaysia days but sunny aswell. Gonna head down to lagoon later for swim cause its too hot now, and off on trip around whitsundays on the 8th. On the camcorder and cds that were lost liz and lee from byron have picked them up for us, and hopefully meeting them in Airlie. We will update on Whitsundays. Sorry about the essay, but I got carried away.
