Round the World in 155 Days!
After sleeping at the ferry port at Wellington we head on up the west side of the North Island. Stop at Stratford to watch some local rugby and then hit the "Forgotten World Highway" no joke thats whats its called, and ten mins into the drive we relise why, apart there being nothing else on the roads which are the most part gravel the road is really windy and hilly but some good views are admired through rainforest, gorges, valleys, tiny villages and rolling hill landscape. As darkness falls and we reach a t-junction a series of unforunate events begin. After agonising over left or right we, I obviously choose the wrong one. At this point on a dark unhabited road the townace trys a 3./4./ eventual 5. turn leading to us getting stuck in mud, but more like wet grass. The Townace won't budge and we are stuck across both lanes on the "forgotten world highway" which is living up to its name, i fear that we may join th forgottn world forever. Trying to push the meaty beast seems unsuccessful and I wish we had John Maggsy and his guns around although saying that we wouldnt have any food to eat. Suddenly relise in this confusion Nicky has disappeard, great. I hear her silently calling from in the dark about 50 metres away. Fearing she has been abducted by aliens i approach cauciously. Turns out in this streesful situation Nicky has wandered off and found her self a bunch of glow worms in the bush. Thats great Nick but what about our transport/ accomodaton that is currently a beached whale in the mud across the Forgotten world highway. Its not even like we havent seen loads of glowing worms already. Anyway recalling my hours of watching Ray Mears TV survival documentary when he unstuck a 4x4 from sand i use the same principle and set to work digging (hands) the mud from behind the wheels. 20 mins later and alot of revs noises and smells coming from the Townace we pull free and set off along the same road anyway never to turn in the road again. Stop at (will add later) to camp and are chased the next morning forgetting to pay.
Head on North through familiar territory and arrive in Auckland. Camp on Andrews drive and spend next week trying to sell townace outside hostels. Also manage during our third time in Auckland to get a tennis beating by more 15 yr olds and the final stop on Dillys Lions Stadium Tour takes place at Eden Park where we actually get to go on pitch which is a great result for the tour. Also get to eat icecream at 12 at night even in the week when its still cold but people are out and about drinking coffee and eating icecream, seems quite strange, also find a cheap asian market on Queenstreet to eat at nearly every night. Eventually sell the camper which has been the most loyal servant to a couple from the US for $1200 which isnt bad, amazing what a bit of silver spray paint can do, espeacilly as a WOT (MOT) was unlikely. At this point i should apologise to Mark whos mobile i unforuntatly brought on our trip, this mobile was my only bargaining tool in making the sale of the Townace, i tried to keep it but they were eager, sorry Mark but it was dodgy i will replace it one day. The phone card also went with it so thats why we havent replied to messages.
Camper sold we change the cash to Fijian dollars, change our flight to the next morning, and head to the airport for a final nights sleep in New Zealand before heading back to the sun. New Zealand has been amzing, words cannot really describe the place but its some where that everyone has gotta go, the scenery is mind blowing and we ve loved our time here.
