We both had an awful nights sleep as the hostel was loud all night. Were up at 5am with taxi picking us up at half past. Taxi ended up costing more than expected as they charged a pre-booking and early hours fee that we'd not been told about!
Our flight itinerary said we were flying at 9am so got there for 6am but then saw the flight was at 10.20am so really early - again!! Got some breakfast and had a look around the shops. Qantas check in wasn't open but we found an early check in desk for all airlines where we were able to check in and get exit row seats! The bonus of being so early!!
The flight was about 5 and a half hours, went quite quickly - they had good films on which helped. The plane was so cold, I'm not sure it helped being next to the emergancy exit door! I asked for an extra blanket on top of the 2 we had but they couldn't find one so said they'd turn up the heat a little for me - later the same hostess saw us shiverring away and got us a crew blanket which did help. My fingers went from blue back to normal but it was so near the end of the flight it was a bit late really!
Passport and immigration all went smoothly but luggage took a while. When we went outside it was bright sunshine with clear blue skies. It was warm but not humid and muggy like it was in Asia whick was nice - more like a hot summers day in England.
There was a shuttle bus going to the city so we paid $30 for us both to be dropped at our hostel, North Lodge. The hostel is a huge Georgian house with rooms being rented out. We have a large double which has a microwave, fridge, kettle and toaster which should help us save some money on food whilst we are here.
After settling in to our massive room we went for a walk. The town is lovely, with such beautiful buildings. All of the bars and restaurants were busy and shops look like those in the Brighton Lanes. We went to an Italian restaurant that the owner of our hostel had reccomended. We had a great pasta meal each but noticed the jump in prices!! We picked up some bread on our way back to the hostel for tomorrow.
Very tired, has been a long day. So weird that we're now in Australia, neither of us can believe we are finally here!!
