We arrived in Cairns following our trip to Ayers Rock and was expecting the weather to still be gorgeous out there but it was quite overcast. It did brighten up for some of the time we were there but we also saw some rain too!
The first night Beth and I went to get our free meal provided by the hostel but ended up just having it as a starter and then trailing the streets of Cairns for Domino's pizza as we were still hungry! It was a really tiny meal! Steve arrived the day after and was suffering from a bit of jetlag. The 3 of us went on a trip to Cape Tribulation the following day. It was a really good trip! We had a great guide who was really funny and also really knowledgeable about the places we went to! He was rally passionate about the place abd obviously loved it there! He took us on a rainforest boardwalk and told us a lot about the trees that live there (sound really boring but it was actually really interesting!!) and we saw loads of flying foxes up in the trees which was pretty cool! We also went to the beach at Cape Tribulation which was really pretty (but not as nice as the Thai beaches!). We went to a gorge as well for a swim but the water was so cold I couldn't get in!! Cairns is full of sugar cane fields as well which I didn't realise!! Did you know that the bottom of the cane makes the brown sugar, the middle makes the white sugar and the top makes icing sugar??!! (Hmm, who fell for that one?!)
The next day we booked to go diving. We were all on the boat when we had to fill in the dreaded medical form! Stupidly I was really honest and told them I had asthma and I was told I couldn't dive (honesty gets you nowhere!). They're really strict uo in Queensland about it. I had a medical form from a doctor at home to say I was fine to dive (and had done 12 dives previously) but I gave it to the people in Thailand when I went to dive with them. So I was thrown off the boat and was gutted!!! I really shouldn't have been truthful about it! Instead I met up with David, Holly and Jonnie who we'd met the night before and they were taking a trip up to Cape Tribulation in a hired car (didn't need to pay for the guided tour yesterday after all!). So I went with them and we had a really good day!! I was their guide for the day and told them all the funny stories we'd been told the day before. It also turned out that we hadn't actually seen the real Cape Tribulation beach the day before! The actualy beach was about 5 minutes further up so it was nice to actually see that!! We saw 2 cassowary birds as well which are really rare! They're the birds with the long spike in their toes that can cut a person open in an instant and your guts have spilled out before you even know what's happened (what a lovely thought!!). We also had a look round Port Douglas which was a lovely little town.
