We experienced our first trip on a Greyhound bus heading to Airlie Beach down the East Coast from Cairns. It wasn't the best of trips! It started off well with a good driver and nice bus but we managed to get stuck behind an accident so we were delayed for a while. The driver then said he wasn't going to head all the way down to Airlie Beach so the few of us who were going there would have to get a later bus from Townsville. So he dropped us in Towsville which was a ghost town! We couldn't even get any food and it was only 5 in the afternoon! We went back to the bus stop to get our later bus at 7pm and were told that that bus had been held up in traffic as well and would be 2 hours late! Great! Stuck in a ghost town with nothing to do! So we amused ourselves by watching 'The Shining' on an iPod (funny film!). So we waited 2 hours and then continued on our way down to Airlie Beach and arrived at 11pm (not bad seeing as we'd left at 9 in the morning!!!!!). We'd booked somewhere to stay so we didn't have to trek around looking for anywhere luckily.
The town didn't really have much to it but we booked a sailing trip around the Whitsundays for the next day. We set off early in the morning and caught our sailing boat with around about 24 other people. It really was a proper sailing boat! It was awesome! The bedrooms weren't quite as awesome! There was no room at all to put any stuff (or actually sleep!) but it was only for one night. We set off on our sailing trip and the weather was gorgeous! Once we left the harbour we were able to go sailing! Some of the guys on the boat helped to put the masts up and off we went! We got to relax for most of the trip which was so nice, sitting in the sun! We also had some amazing food which I didn't expect from a sailing trip.
Our first stop on our trip was to Whitehaven beach. I can't even describe how amazing that place is! The photo above can only show some of it! It's just beautiful! We looked at it from a lookout above and then went onto the beach. The sand is so clean it squeaks when you walk on it! It was amzing with the blue sky, and amazing beach!! We saw some turtles in the sea from the boat too! That night we all tucked into some nachos and spag bol and did some drinking! We spent the night on the boat which was cool. I spent most of the evening on the deck just looking at the stars. The sky was so clear out there and you could see for miles! It was also quite relaxing with the rocking of the boat! What wasn't so relaxing was going down to the cabin to sleep after a few glasses of wine! It's so much better being on deck as when you go below you can really feel the rocking motion!!
The next day I got to go diving!! Yay! Admittedly I did lie about having asthma this time so they wouldn't say I couldn't go!! The dive was a bit rubbish though. It was still technically the great barrier reef but the visibility was awful. If you looked away from your buddy and then looked back you could barely see them! We barely saw anything either!, although there was a cute batfish that followed me the whole way round!
We sailed to another little island and did some sunbathing and then sailed back to shore. It was a really great trip! That night we met most of the people from the boat for a few drinks and a few 'boat races' with another table (which involved drinking!).
