We left Delhi behind and started our mamouth drive North. After 11 hours, we arrived in Amritsar, home of Sikhism. We crashed out ready for a full day of sight seeing on Sunday, the Sikh holy day.
We started early with head scarves at the ready and walked to the Golden Temple. Our grumbling tummies took over though so we called into a local street cafe for a breakfast of stuffed naan with chilli! Delicious! We made our way (along with several thousand other 'pilgrims') to the Golden Temple. The view that met us was breathtaking! We queued to enter the temple and gave sweets to the Gods. We then relaxed around the lake and watched devoted Sikhs bathing in the Holy waters. It was an amazing experience.
We then visited a park where 2000 Indians were massacred by the British in 1913 following a peace rally organised by Ghandi. It was really moving as you could see where the bullet holes had hit the walls. The whole area has now been turned into a memorial site.
Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, Gopal drove us to the Pakinstani border to watch the evening ceremony of lowering the flags. The ceremony has a party atmosphere with the driveway filled with teenagers dancing to the latest 'tunes' being played on high speakers! The event then takes a 'serious' turn and the soldiers march John Cleese sytle too and from the border with the Pakistani soldiers copying! The crowd decided who is the best by how loud the cheering is! Keep an eye out for videos and photos - we are struggling to find an internet cafe that can download them!
In the evening, we returned to the Temple to be even more amazed with the view at night. We were then treated to a free meal at the temple served up by the many volunteer staff. We sat with hundreds of Indians, crossed legged on the floor, and enjoyed a yummy dinner! Still loving every second! Next installment coming soon!
